On Wednesday, October 17, 2018, Ruth Barr plead guilty to Computer Theft, False Statements, and criminal attempt to commit theft, and was sentenced to ten years of probation.

In 2017, agents with the Department of Revenue’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) raided Ruth Barr’s tax preparation business in Fulton County and arrested Barr. The raid was the result from an extended investigation and undercover operation into Barr’s tax preparation business.

“Ruth Barr was one of the worst offenders for filing fraudulent tax returns,” said OSI Director Josh Waites. “She did a disservice to legitimate tax preparers across the state and we are pleased with the guilty plea and the sentence.”

The case was prosecuted by the Office of the Attorney General.

The Department is currently working with Barr’s victims to help them repay fraudulent refunds and assisting them with getting back into compliance with Georgia’s tax laws. The probation period will not begin until Barr completes her current sentence for an unrelated crime in Gwinnett County.
